According to a study appeared in the Journal of Periodontology, people can diminish any pain connected with the severe rheumatoid arthritis just by taking care of their dental health. It is possible to have less arthritic pain and not to suffer from swollen joints when treating gums in the right way.

Nabil Bissada, an author on the study, adds: “Patients with a severe kind of active rheumatoid arthritis reported that their signs and symptoms of swollen joints improved significantly after dental treatment procedures.”

“The most impressing was that it was enough only to eliminate the infection and inflammation in the gums. It’s a new challenge in the modern dental and rheumatology sciences” adds Bissada.

Dr Ali Askari, another participant of this study, proves that even history has numerous examples of treating rheumatoid arthritis by taking care of gums’ health. In the past, healers suspected a link between these two diseases. It was used to extract teeth and to help people who suffered from arthritis feel better this way.

Askari considers that this historical discovery should make rheumatologists think about encouraging their patients consider the close relationship periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

“This discovery is another example of how good oral health can influence positively other body systems. The same connection has already been found for premature births, heart disease and diabetes. The human’s body should be treated only as an integral organism.” says Bissada.
