CBS 42 News — Strolling through the Riverchase Galleria you may be tempted by a number of impulse purchases. Here’s one right here; a cosmetic teeth whitening kiosk to brighten your smile in just 12 minutes. But how does it work? How effective it is? And is it really safe?

At “Mysmile,” it all starts with your smile. First you take an impression of your teeth. Next, the trays are filled with whitening gel, made of hydrogen peroxide. You then insert the trays into your mouth and go under the accelerator lights. After 12 minutes, you’re all done.

My smile charges $99 a teeth whitening treatment. You could pay anywhere from three to five times that at the dentist’s office. But how safe is the “in-kiosk” teeth whitening process?

UAB School of Dentistry professor Dr. Jim Broome says his biggest issue is that there’s no dentist on hand to oversee the teeth whitening procedure.

“You need to go to the person that’s most qualified to make an overall assessment of what the real issue is,” said Broome.

“I’m not a dental hygienist or a dentist, so we’re not licensed to touch your teeth or your mouth at all. So it’s a self administered process; we’re just here to make sure you do everything right,” said Adam Daivd of Mysmile.

The Alabama Board of Dental Examiners believes it is an illegal practice of dentistry as defined by the Alabama Dental Practice Act.

Jim Ward, and attorney for the Board of Dental Examiners, said, “So the board believes that general definition, who performs or attempts or professes to perform a dental operation, which obviously tooth bleaching is.”

A Mysmile district manager says the teeth whitening is safe and is a cosmetic procedure, not the practice of dentistry.

Earlier this year, the board was instrumental in shutting down another teeth whitening kiosk in the Galleria known as “Bleachbright” for practicing dentistry without a license. Ward says Bleachbright, like Mysmile, also used the “self administered process.”

Right now, the board is working on a case involving teeth whitening in a Montgomery salon.

  1. I have done a treatment in a mall, and had no issues with it. It works and is simple…I will do it again in a year!!!

  2. I know of an operator in New Jersey who was re-using the mouth pieces. He is operating a mall kiosk. Beware. The mall does not check criminal records for people signing leases. Even when mall management was notified they continued to allow him to operate.

  3. I’ve haven’t tried the whitening kiosk in the mall. I don’t know that I’d trust they could do a better job than an actual dental office. Why would I want my mouth open for all mall goers to see anyway?

Have you heard, they’re now starting to implement Tattoo parlors in the mall now too?

  4. I have taken a logic course.
The logic of Dentists is that one of their Dental practices is being performed (undermined) without a license. Of course, the Kiosk businesses are stating that they do not perform this practice because, they do not touch the mouth. It is a self administered product, accelerated by a special LED Blue Light that is turned on by the client.
However, what about the self-administered over the counter product? That has been on the market for about 10+ years. Why is this self-administered product still on the market? The ADA has not had any success of removing this product from the market even though they may have a strong political action group to torpedo this product. Evidently, Dentist Groups only want to hit the small businesses due to loss of an income bonanza that they charge too high for. Even so, there are instructions within the product on what it is, what it does, and who cannot use the product without proper Dentist approval. These simple instructions are taught to the employees.
Reminds me of the 1960′s “Down with the man/unfair monopolizers!”

  5. I got this done in Canada, there is one open at cross iron mills mall just outside of calgary. They say it tingles and it sure did, where my gums turned white, which they said they could “blanch”, With in a couple hours I was missing all the skin and I have exposed tissue that is very painful and sore. Not to mention that anything is causing it to bleed. I am very uspet and this was never montioned that this could happen. Over night the part that is explosed has become bigger and more painful. I am in the middle of speaking with someone about getting my money back. THIS IS NOT WORHT IT!!!! I feel they have no told us everything about the outcomes that could happen. Dont waste your time or money!!!!! As well there has been many that have been closed due to unsafe practices

  6. I asked about liability insurance, they carry none- so in the event my tissues is damaged, or my teeth become so sensitive I can’t eat or drink hot or hot foods, there is no recourse. Dentists and Dental Hygienists carry malpractice insurance. It is “at your own risk” because you are doing the work- not the uneducated person at the mall
