Dental Care Cost too Expensive even for the Insured

According to a recent study by the Ipsos Social Research Institute, around 2 million Americans couldn’t afford dental treatment in the past two years.

They needed proper dental care, but they simply couldn’t afford to pay for it. The same study reveals that even though some of these people had private dental insurance, it still did not cover for the respective dental treatments.

The same happens with many of the residents of Sydney, Australia, who did not go to the dentist because they could not pay the out-of-pocket fees. Today these extra high fees do not have a huge impact only on the low income people, but several million of middle-income families are affected at the same level.

Associate Professor Hans Zoeller, who is the head of oral pathology and oral medicine at the University of Sydney, says that dental care has reached extremely expensive thresholds exactly because a system such as Medicare does not exist.

Medicare plays an important role in controlling the pricing issues, and if such a system lacks, things get extremely complicated.

The professor further reveals that the lack of a proper dental hygiene brings about an increase of medical conditions such as strokes, diabetes, heart diseases and plenty others. All these numbers could be kept low if people could get proper and affordable dental care whenever needed.

The government has had an attempt to create as system in dental care similar to Medicare. The program was called the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme, but since it has created more chaos than organization in the system, it is expected to close down by the end of the year.

A massive investigation is in force regarding this dental system, since the records of well over 600 dentists are under scrutiny, because it is believed that they are misusing the funds from the government.

It has been found that through the dental program, patients struggling with chronic illnesses were entitled to receive up to $4250 in Medicare coverage for dental care; however, they received such coverage only if individuals were referred to a dental specialist by their general practitioner.

The government continuously carries on investigations to see whether dentists comply with the general regulations when it comes to dental insurance coverage, grants and different funds.

In many cases it was discovered that dentists charged the highest end of the price, but effectuated work worth only a small fraction of the real value.

  1. I think it’s easy for people to believe they cannot afford the dentist to avoid going. No one likes going! Doing some research to find a Fresno dentist definitely showed me that prices do vary — and there’s always some way to make it work, even if you need to set up a payment plan. I’m glad I did it, be cause now I don’t stress about my smile anymore!
